We offer a full range of on-farm services such as TB testing, velvetting, synchronising AI programmes and pregnancy testing.
Experience and local knowledge means we can tailor an animal health plan to your farm. Mineral supplementation is important on the Central Plateau so blood and liver samples can be taken to plan and monitor your supplementation programme.
We use rectal ultra-sound for pregnancy testing. This can be done earlier than abdominal scanning so empty hinds can be off the property in the late autumn or early winter.
Trace Minerals
Getting the mineral levels right in your animals is crucial for optimal stock performance.
The pumice soils around this area are classically low in Copper, Cobalt, Selenium, Sodium and Magnesium, and most stock will need some form of supplementation.
Because the amounts of minerals required are low, and there is a fine line between deficiency, being adequate, or becoming toxic we provide a mineral testing and advisory service. We have the options of blood testing, performing liver biopsies or analysing samples from the freezing works.

Parasites
Parasites are probably the number one growth limiting animal health issue in the district. Our cool winters and sometimes dry summers are enough to halt the hatching of eggs on the pasture but never severe enough to kill off most of the eggs. Spring and autumn can see rapid increases in infective larva on the pasture and outbreaks of clinical parasitism, especially in lambs and calves.
We advocate minimising the use of drenches to avoid resistance issues but this has to be balanced with getting maximum growth rates in our stock. Integrated grazing, cropping rotations and correct timing of drenches are all important.
There is a wide range of drenches on the market and the choice of oral, injectable and pour-on applications. It can be confusing to sift through all the advertising bombardment so the best plan is to discuss the options that best suit your farming operation.
